Hello, my name is Jorge Bex I am a Latinx artist working in Seattle,
My work argues for cultural identity and perception in a hybrid attempt to embody representations of self and community through visual language and sound. In our current society, there is an atmosphere of almost absolute assimilation, where information is accepted without questioning its origin, resulting in polarization, something I explore in my defragmenting aesthetic. Ultimately, I am interested in those moments where the traditional relationship between producer and observer becomes undone and is replaced with new methods that challenge the oppressive cultural context to make room for work that creates a different cultural reality. These forms of understanding are grounded in human experiences and interactions that yield outcomes both individually liberating and culturally enlightening.
I consider myself an interdisciplinary artist employing artistic mediums that incorporate elements of painting, cinematography, photography, and audio production. My interest and work in the creative arts spans a range of media and engages a dialogue among them, to expand my understanding. The concepts and techniques utilized in my practice are derived from both a technical curiosity of form and aspect as well as the intuitive and interactive nature of how these processes intersect with the world around us.
Through reflecting on my own additive acculturation, I have begun to understand and process the change I seek to be, which in turn has made me envision my creative activity within a cultural and socially responsible framework. My use of hard-edge motifs comes from a fascination with the continued fragmentation of self in our society. This fragmentation is what I see as the dilemma of the contemporary subject who, in forming their identity, now relies almost entirely on an instantaneous and sometimes socially manufactured reality. In an effort to make sense of the world around me, I submit my art practice as a social product.
